A message from our CEO

Hello, and welcome. We’re delighted you’re considering joining the Lewisham Irish Community Centre.

We have been at the heart of the Irish community in Rushey Green for 30 years, in that time we have evolved to support the changing needs of both the Irish community and the wider needs of our service users, friends and neighbors.

We are an ambitious charity that strives to bring the best of Irish warmth, support, and culture to the borough of Lewisham. You can read more about our ambitions in our Strategic Plan – lewishamirish.org.uk/our-strategy

We are a community centre with Irish roots but you don’t need to be Irish to work with us. Our staff play a pivotal role in helping us deliver for the whole community and we warmly welcome applications from anyone who shares our values and vision.

I hope you enjoy reading more about us and our work, our strategy and impact. We hope to speak to you soon.

Kathleen Sheridan – CEO

Current Vacancies

Irish Community Engagement Officer

Work base:

Lewisham Irish Community Centre/Hybrid

Hours:

24.5 hours with flexibility on days

Salary:

£20,689 (FTE £29,556)

Contract:

Permanent

Lewisham Irish Community Centre is committed to being an inclusive and diverse space—one that enriches the lives of current and future service users. We aim to foster a stronger sense of belonging and identity within the wider Irish community, celebrating Irish Traveller culture, Mixed Race Irish heritage, the local Irish LGBT+ community, and the elderly Irish population.

As Irish Community Engagement Officer, you will lead the development of vibrant community groups, supporting volunteers to come together and connect with others. You will work with the Irish LGBT+ communities, Irish Traveller communities, Mixed Race Irish individuals, older Irish people, and others at the local level.

We’ll be led by the community, but we expect you’ll support these groups to lead with activity that brings people together, including arts and cultural programming. You will work with the community to coordinate events that mark History Month and other awareness days, ensuring they are inclusive and engaging for both the Irish and wider local communities. You will champion the diversity of the Irish community, support outreach to local and national groups, and build meaningful connections across sectors.

A key element of this role will be to lead the communication of what the charity can offer to a broad range of audiences across social media, the website, and print.

A key part of your role will be to develop a culturally sensitive befriending service, matching isolated members of the community with trained befrienders. You will also lead a reminiscence project that enables older Irish residents to contribute their life stories to the Lewisham Irish Life Stories collection.

Through these initiatives, you will help reduce social isolation and loneliness, improve mental health through friendship and connection, and raise awareness within the broader Irish community about its own diversity. Your work will also help strengthen and sustain the Irish Centre by increasing access, expanding cultural programming, and raising the Centre’s profile locally and nationally.
